Red eyes are a consequence of dilation of the blood vessels in the white part of the eye, the sclera. At the base of the dilation there can be several causes, from air dryness, excessive exposure to sun, passing through the presence of dust or other foreign bodies in the eye to trauma (including those arising from the use of contact lenses ) and real diseases, such as allergies or glaucoma. Eyes may also redden form coughing, because stress can in fact cause bleeding under the conjunctiva.

While in some cases it is a minor problem that resolves itself without consequences, in other cases it is the symptom of worrying conditions. The presence of associated symptoms should prompt us to seek medical attention. In case of infection, such as redness, it may be associated with itching, pain, vision problems or greenish or yellowish secretions.

What is the therapy for red eyes?

If your eyes are red from fatigue or from an effort you do not need any treatment, the best remedy is to try to rest. However, if the redness is associated with an infection or a disease, speak to your doctor about how to treat the disorder in the most suitable way. Sometimes eye drop can be sufficient, maybe containing antibiotics, while other times you may need a more specific treatment.
