The medical term "onychomadesis" refers to a disorder that is popularly called "loss of the nail." Onychomadesis is the detachment of the nail plate from the nail bed (or the portion of skin to which the nail is physiologically related) resulting in fall of the nail itself. The detachment begins at the base of the nail and then progressively progresses in the free margin of the nail, causing the final separation and fall.

Generally this disorder occurs secondarily to the presence of different pathological processes (dermatitis, eczema, allergies, onychomycosis), but it can also be a result of trauma to the nail and the side effect of some medications.
