The leukonychia is a condition characterized by total or partial discoloration of the nail plate (the surface outside of nail) due to bleaching of the nail matrix. Usually it manifests itself with the appearance of irregular whitish spots or stripes in color. There are several causes that can be the basis, among them the most frequent are local trauma (due, for example, to practices of manicure too aggressive), nutritional deficiencies, diseases of the nail and skin diseases.
The presence of irregular whitish spots or stripes may be accompanied by the disintegration of the nail plate.

- Alopecia areata
- Anemia
- Food shortages
- Liver cirrhosis
- Seborrheic dermatitis
- Dermatophytosis
- Eczema
- Kidney failure
- Hyperthyroidism
- Onicofagia
- Onychomycosis
- Psoriasis
- Trauma
