The term odynophagia indicates to a condition in which the swallowing triggers pain or burning in the neck or behind the breastbone. This problem may be associated chest pain, the feeling of having food stuck in the throat and a feeling of heaviness or pressure in the neck or upper chest while eating.
The pain on swallowing may be associated with any problem you may occur during the process that leads to swallowing, from the time of mastication till the time in which the food arrives in the stomach. At the base there can be infections (cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex, HIV, Candida), esophagus problems (such as achalasia or inflammation), dental abscesses, ulcers in the mouth or throat or presence of material stuck in the throat (such as a Fishbone).

The discomfort associated with odinofagia can be relieved by eating slowly and chewing your food well, eating pureed foods or smoothies, and if the problem gets worse, avoiding food and drink very cold or very hot.
In case of suffocation you should perform the Heimlich maneuver to clear the airway.
When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of odynophagia?
In case of odynophagia, seek medical attention if the problem is associated with the presence of blood in the stool, if the stools are black or if you have problems of evacuation, in case of shortness of breath or dizziness, and if you lose weight for no apparent reason.
