Primaquine acts by preventing the development of blood forms of Plasmodium vivax, the parasite responsible for the so-called vivax malaria.

Primaquine is contraindicated in case of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and certain blood disorders. It should also not be used in case of recent use of quinacrine or administration of drugs that can interfere with the activity of the bone marrow.

Moreover, before starting treatment it is important to tell your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients, other medicines, foods, or any other substance
  • You are taking other medications, herbal remedies and supplements, in particular quinacrine and drugs that may increase the risk of QT prolongation
  • You suffer (or have suffered) from G6PDH deficiency, favismo, NADH methemoglobin reductase deficiency, heart problems, low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
