Famotidine belongs to the class of drugs referred to as H2 antagonists. Its action is based on the reduction of the production of acid in the stomach.

 

What is Famotidine?

 

Famotidine is used to treat ulcers in the stomach and of the intestines, gastroesophageal reflux and conditions where the stomach produces too much acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

 

Moreover, it can also be used to prevent and treat heartburn associated with indigestion and acidity that can be triggered by certain foods or drinks.

 

How should Famotidine be taken?

 

Famotidine assumes the form of tablets to be swallowed, chewable tablets, capsules or solutions. It can be taken in a single dose before bedtime or divided into 2-4 doses spread throughout the day.

When it is used as a preventive measure it should be taken from 15 to 60 minutes before eating or drinking foods and beverages that trigger heartburn.

 

Side effects associated with Famotidine

 

The possible adverse effects of famotidine may include:

 

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • In children, difficulty accepting the food
  • Dizziness

 

You should immediately contact a doctor if your intake of famotidine triggers any of the following:

 

  • Difficulty breathing or difficulty swallowing
  • Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles or calves
  • Itching
  • Skin rash
  • Hoarseness

 

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Famotidine

 

Before taking famotidine it is recommended to tell your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance or cimetidine, the nizatidine, ranitidine or to any other medication
  • You are taking medicinal products, herbal remedies and supplements, and in particular medications taken for reflux and heartburn
  • You suffer from phenylketonuria or if you have suffered from problems with swallowing or kidney disturbances
  • You are pregnant
  • You are breast-feeding
