Dapsone is an antibiotic that is generally used to treat leprosy; however, its mechanism of operation has not yet been clarified.
What is Dapsone?
Dapsone is used to treat leprosy, alone or in combination with other drugs. It is also used in treating skin infections and dermatitis herpetiformis.
How should Dapsone be taken?
Dapsone is taken orally in tablet form. The dosage may include 3 doses per day, 1 dose per day or per week. Since it can cause gastric discomfort the medication should be taken with food or milk.
Side effects associated with Dapsone
Among the possible adverse effects of dapsone are included the following:
- Digestive discomfort
- Vomiting
It is important to immediately contact a doctor if the treatment is associated with the appearance of:
- Hematomas
- Fever
- Jaundice
- Sore throat
- Rash
Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Dapsone
Dapsone can sensitize the skin to the sun's rays. Therefore, you should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, wear protective clothing, sunglasses and use adequate sun protection when undergoing treatment with this medication. Moreover, prior to taking dapsone it is important to tell your doctor if:
- You have any allergies to the active substance or any other drug
- You are taking medicines, herbal remedies and supplements, remembering to mention aminobenzoate acid amino benzoic acid, clofazimine, didanosine, probenecid, pyrimethamine, rifampin, trimetropin and vitamins
- You suffer (or have suffered) from anemia or liver disease
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
