The ER-Emergency Center of High Specialty (EHS), which became operational in November 2003, has been built taking into account the most advanced models of construction and organization to ensure optimal management of patients.
The emergency room, which has an input separated from the main block of Humanitas, has a shock room for the management of emergency cases with absolute priority, 7 visiting rooms, 14 observation posts and of all the equipment suitable for early diagnostic tests, and for urgent and emergency treatments.
A team of Internists and Surgeons of urgency is constantly present (24 hours a day) that are allowed to intervene in high specialty related emergency cases such as: Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Coronary Unit, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Traumatology. If necessary all the experts present at Humanitas are called in.
The Emergency Department at Humanitas, besides complying with the emergency cases that cannot be postponed, uses the specialty of Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Psychiatry to support the other regional centers. Patients who come to the emergency department are received and evaluated by a nurse who, through the Triage system, quickly determines the severity and priority of the patient by assigning a color code. Following the investigations and treatments provided in the emergency department, the patient could be discharged if the clinical condition permits, with precise indication of the follow-up. In more severe cases, the patient can be transferred to an appropriate medical ward.
