The Operating Unit, in collaboration with the University, deals with the prevention, diagnosis and medical treatment and/or therapeutic endoscopy of digestive diseases (esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, anus and rectum, pancreas and biliary tract).
Out-patient clinical activities conducted include:
- Diagnostic endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound)
- Pathophysiology of the digestive system (stationary esophageal manometry and anorectal manometry, PH-metry and 24 hour stationary esophageal manometry, biofeedback)
- Genetic counseling services for family members of patients with potentially hereditary digestive cancers
- Specialist visits- Gastroenterology Level 1 (definition of the disease, diagnosis and treatment plan)
- Specialist visits-Level 2 for the following specific diseases:
- Diseases of the esophagus (gastroesophageal reflux, disturbs motility)
- Inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, indeterminate colitis) and celiac disease
- Diseases of the pancreas
- Constipation and incontinence
Hospitalization activities include:
- Urgent admissions (digestive bleeding, acute pancreatitis, cholecystitis, inflammation of the bowel)
- Elective admissions for acute digestive diseases
- Surgical endoscopy procedures (dilatation and esophageal prosthesis, sclerotherapy and endoscopic ligatures of esophageal varices, complex polypectomies, retrograde cholangiopancreatography, sphincterotomy, biliary prosthesis, extraction of gallstones, enteral prostheses, mucosectomy, EUS ultrasound)
