Intraoperative Ultrasonography (US) of the liver is a specific application of sonography technique during liver surgery (intraoperative ultrasonography) which includes use of a contrast agent to better highlight hepatic nodules, be they primitive or metastatic tumors, in the course of a hepatic resection procedure, that is when the ill liver portion is surgically removed.
In the wake of the best-in-class worldwide experience, the current study clearly defines the scope of the clinical benefits of this methodology, namely a more accurate assessment of liver involvement by the disease, which allows the surgeon to be more confident in terms of completeness of intervention. Moreover, the type of patients for whom the use of contrast agents delivers the best benefits is established for the first time, thus determining when their use is unavoidable.
