Consists in the creation of a proximal gastric pocket by sectioning of the stomach. The continuity of the digestive tract is restored by connecting to the first part of intestine (jejunum) after it is sectioned. Weight loss results from appetite reduction and, most importantly, early satiety.
This operation can be performed using laparoscopy, which is a minimally-invasive procedure; only rarely is the traditional open-abdomen approach chosen.
