Sight is certainly one of the senses we rely most on, which is why it is important to take care of your eyes and have regular eye checkups.
Although it is not possible to implement preventive strategies that can prevent the onset of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma or diseases affecting the cornea, “early diagnosis is essential, because it allows you to act early and intervene on the disease before it reaches an advanced stage, perhaps forcing the patient to undergo invasive and destructive therapies. This is affirmed by Professor Paolo Vinciguerra, Head of the Ophthalmology Centre at Humanitas.
The detachment of the retina
Retinal detachment occurs when a layer of the retina, the tissue essential for vision, lifts up by dragging along the blood vessels that provide the eye with oxygen and nutrients. Already 48 hours after detachment the cells begin to die, with progressive loss of vision.
“Periodic and accurate inspection of the periphery of the retina and precise study of the vitreous are essential. The ophthalmologist could notice the lesion at an early stage and intervene with the laser, thus preventing the retina from becoming detached”, explains Prof. Vinciguerra.
Symptoms for attention are dark bodies and flashes of light in sight. In their presence, the ophthalmologist must be consulted without delay.
Lack of vision, attention to children
In primary school years, children often complain of visual impairment.
“Astigmatism, myopia or hypermetropia are defects that can lead to strabismus if not corrected promptly”, explains the specialist.
It is also important to verify that behind a difficulty in the study there is no visual problem, such as amblyopia, the so-called lazy eye and the main cause of visual disability among children.
This disorder is linked to an incorrect visual and neuronal development: “Recognizing the problem late and making a delayed correction can have an impact that lasts over time,” says Professor Vinciguerra.
