The Centre for Functional and Biological Knee Reconstruction in Humanitas, directed by Professor Maurilio Marcacci, will be the coordinating center of a European and US study that will test a new treatment in patients with knee cartilage degeneration.

We talk about this topic with Professor Elizaveta Kon, Head of the Section of Translational Orthopedics and specialist at the Centre.

“The study foresees the intervention with a new biomaterial developed in Israel, highly innovative and with great regenerative potential. This is a randomized study, in which patients will be randomly assigned either the intervention with a new biomaterial or the arthroscopic intervention that is now considered routine”.

The objective of the study

“The study involves patients who are difficult to treat, with cartilage lesions that lead to arthrosic degeneration of the knee, which requires the implantation of a prosthesis at an advanced stage. With this new biomaterial we are aiming at biological joint reconstruction in an attempt to regenerate bone and cartilage in order to avoid prosthesis in the future,” explains Professor Kon.

The study involves a crossover: a patient who has participated in the control group (arthroscopic intervention) can access the new treatment at a later date,” Professor Kon explains.

Patients aged 21 to 75 with knee cartilage lesions may participate in the study.

A first visit to Humanitas with one of the specialists from the Centre for Functional and Biological Knee Reconstruction will be required to participate in the study.
