Artificial intelligence, how can it help colonoscopy?

April 5, 2019

Fundamental in the prevention and early diagnosis of cancers of the colon and digestive tract, endoscopic examinations – the most important of which is certainly colonoscopy, given the high incidence of cancer affecting this organ – are becoming more and more sophisticated and effective thanks to technology. Artificial Intelligence, in particular is contributing significantly to improving its performance and results. We talked about it with Prof. Alessandro Repici, Head of the Digestive Endoscopy Unit at Humanitas and Professor of Gastroenterology at Humanitas University.

The increased diagnostic capabilities of the technology

“New technologies improve our ability to diagnose polypod lesions in particular because artificial intelligence has a much greater capacity than our eyes and minds to process, identify and classify possible lesions, both polypods and tumors,” the Professor clarified. “Humanitas is also working to develop artificial intelligence systems that assist doctors during procedures to identify small and early polyps in order to achieve real prevention of colon cancer”.
