Type 2 Diabetes, do you know that gastric bypass reduces anti-diabetic therapy?

January 1, 2018

Gastric bypass is a procedure performed for surgical therapy of obesity, which can also have important positive effects on type 2 diabetes, in addition to gastroesophageal reflux disease, both associated with obesity – explains Dr. Giuseppe Marinari, Head of Bariatric Surgery Humanitas. As far as type 2 diabetes is concerned, i.e. the type of diabetes that is dietary, the benefits are already seen a few days after the bypass operation, which involves the creation of a tiny gastric pocket, the volume being equal to a cup of coffee, capable of containing only a small amount of food. Although weight loss is still minimal, people with type 2 diabetes can reduce or even eliminate anti-diabetic therapy. This is because the effect of the bypass on diabetes is not related to weight loss but to a profound modification induced in the secretion of hormones by the digestive tract. Thus, it is an active modification on diabetes that can soon stop therapy.
