Dr. Giulio Maira is the head of the Cerebrocranial Neurosurgery in the Humanitas Research Hospital. For many years he has headed the Neurosurgery Department in the Catholic University in Rome, and currently he is the neurosurgery professor in the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome. From 2003 to 2014 he was one of the members of the Health Board (CSS) and now he is a member of several committees of the Research and Teaching evaluation Universities Ministry. Dr. Maira is the official neurosurgeon of the Vatican City-State, member of the European Association of neuro surgeons and reviewer of the most important scientific journals in the field of neurosurgery (Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery Journal, Word of Neurosurgery, Neurology Journal, Hypophysis, Neurological Sciences, European Journal of Neurodegenerative Diseases). Dr. Maira studied in Canada, where he was trained by the professor Jules Hardy, leader in the field of pituitary diseases surgery, and then in – Switzerland where he worked with the prof. Yasargil Ghazi, leader in the field of the vascular malformations and skull base tumors surgical treatment. His team was nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in their activity area which is mostly dedicated to the oncological brain and skull surgery (pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma, cerebral glioma, meningioma, neurinoma and skull base tumors), intracranial vascular diseases (aneurysms, arteriovenous congenital anomaly, cavernomas), hydrocephalus therapy. Dr. Maira performed more than 13.000 neurosurgeries as a surgeon-in-chief.
Dr. Maira is the founder and president of the Athena Onlus Fund, the main task of which is to promote the researches in the field of neurology. Moreover, he is the author of 327 publications published in the international journals. The most interesting areas for Dr. Maira are the following: hydrocephalus, experimental epilepsy, utilization of lasers in neurosurgery, stem cell biology for the central nevrous system regeneration research, intracranial aneurisms gene expression research. At the present time he is the holder of grant from the Ministry of Education which he had got to study the neural stem cells role in the brain tumor growth.
In June 2014 Dr. Maira organized the international conference dedicated for biological researches and advanced treatment methods of the brain malignant tumors. In collaboration with the researches from the McGill Universities, Columbia and Los Angeles, the study group in the Humanitas Research Hospital was arranged, the purpose of which was the brain malignant tumor treatment regimen improvement. The professor is also the author of the intracranial aneurism treatment guideline standards accepted by the Health Ministry, as well as the coordinator of the national organization of the aneurysms treatment before breakage research methods.
Prof. Maira is also invited in the capacity of lecturer to the Catholic University of Rome, to the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, to the McGill University in Montreal, to the European Parliament in Brussels and to the Columbia University in New York. Dr. Giulio Maira has got numerous international awards among which the Grand Cross Knight Award which is the highest state award in Italy.
