Cystitis is a lower urinary tract inflammation that can cause various symptoms, including frequent urination, pain during urination, discomfort in the lower abdomen, and sometimes, blood in the urine. While it mainly affects women, men can also suffer from it.
According to gynecologists, the leading cause of cystitis is bacteria attacking the bladder’s walls. In cases of stress or hormonal imbalance, the risk of developing this inflammation is more significant, as the immune system is weakened and unable to fight off the attack of bacteria.
To prevent and treat cystitis, it is recommended to combine proper hydration and
supplements. The recommended supplements include:
- Blueberry-based supplements: Blueberries inhibit the mechanism underlying cystitis, namely the adhesion of bacteria to the bladder mucosa, thus preventing their proliferation.
- D-Mannose supplements: D-Mannose allows for rebuilding the integrity of the bladder mucosa, preventing bacterial infections. However, high doses may be an obstacle to the patient’s completion of treatment.
- Hyaluronic acid supplements: Hyaluronic acid prevents the occurrence of infectious recurrences. Unlike other supplements, it can also be administered intravesically, thus in direct contact with the bladder.
It is essential to note that antibiotics should only be taken in the presence of bacterial infections, not inflammation, which is the case with cystitis. The inappropriate use of antibiotics leads to the development of colonies of antibiotic-resistant germs and bacteria, which are dangerous in the medium to long term, not only for the individual but also for public health.
To prevent cystitis, it is essential not to hold back urine. Delaying going to the bathroom prevents the bladder from emptying, thus leaving behind residue that can easily lead to infection – the foundation block of cystitis. Proper hydration is also crucial, and it is recommended to drink between 1.5 and 2 liters of water per day, depending on seasonality and one’s fluid loss. It is important not to overdo it and avoid overloading the bladder function.
In summary, proper hydration and the intake of supplements such as blueberry-based, D-Mannose, and hyaluronic acid supplements can help prevent and treat cystitis. Avoiding inappropriate antibiotics intake, not holding back urine, and maintaining proper hydration levels are essential to prevent cystitis.
