Doctor Piero Volpi is the Head of the Orthopaedics of the Knee and Sport Traumatology Unit at Humanitas Research Hospital.

His activity is focused on the treatment of sport traumas, minimally invasive surgeries performed with the arthroscopic technique, with a focus on knee, shoulder and ankle surgeries and damaged cartilage treatments.

Ligament knee reconstruction and tendons and cartilage reparations are fields of intense research of Doctor Volpi. His studies had also to do with the traumatic epidemiology of sports and with the application of principles of prevention in order to reduce and minimize the traumas coming from sports.

During the last 10 years, with his team, he has treated numerous professional athletes from various sports, especially football, and he has performed more than 5,000 knee and ankle arthroscopies, 3,000 ligament surgery of knee and ankle, more than 1,000 joint replacements and about 1,000 tendons repair and cartilage treatment surgeries.

Doctor Volpi has been the Responsible Physician and Head of Medical Team of F.C. Internazionale Milano from 1995 to 2000. He is also Consultant for the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC), since 2000, Instructor of medical subjects of FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association), and member of the Anti-Doping Commission and of the SLA Commission of FIGC (Italian Football Federation).

Current Teaching Activity: starting from 2011, he is teaching professor of residency programme in orthopaedic and traumatology at the University of Milan, and tutor in matters related to sport traumas and reparative surgery of the knee.

Doctor Volpi has previously been teaching professor of residency programme in sports medicine at the University of Milan (from 1993 to 2000).

He is also author of more than 200 publications (10% in international journals) and over 500 contributions, including book chapters, articles and presentations in scientific national and international meetings.
