The indication for surgery depends on the well-established diagnostic paths starting with standard neurological tests. These tests are performed in order to evaluate muscle strength, muscle tone, sensitivity, distribution and type of pain, which may in fact be continuous or irregular, such as a vise or cramp. Afterwards, more rigorous examinations are done. The guidelines currently accepted, indicate an instrumental method used as a first choice in such instances. This method is known as a CT scan and is performed on a patient after a period of medical treatment does not improve their condition. This observation period is necessary because not all back pain is determined by the presence of a hernia. Normally, diagnosis can be made after one month if the medication given is not working. This intervention always creates a zone that is less resistant and is performed only in the presence of specific indications, meaning in cases where the benefits outweigh the “side effects”.
