Ibutilide is an antiarrhythmic. It works by slowing down the conduction of the irregular heartbeat throughout the heart. This in turn allows regular heart rhythm to take over.
How should Ibutilide be taken?
Ibutilide is administered intravenously via infusion.
Side effects associated with Ibutilide
Among the possible side effects of ibutilide include the following:
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Rapid heartbeat
It is important to contact a doctor immediately if you experience:
- Rash
- Urticaria
- Difficulty breathing
- Tightness or chest pain
- Swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue
- Fainting
- Rapid or slow heartbeat
- Heart block
- Heart failure
- Shortness of breath
- Swelling of the hands or feet
- Worsening abnormal heart beat
Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Ibutilide
Ibutilide may be contraindicated in cases of QT prolongation and if you are taking itraconazole.
The intake of the drug can impair the ability to drive or operate hazardous machinery. This side effect may be aggravated by alcohol and certain other medications.
Before starting treatment with ibutilide, it is important to tell your doctor if:
- You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients or to any other drugs, food or various substances
- You are taking any other medications, herbal remedies or supplements. Mentioning in particular: arsenic, cisapride, itraconazole, ketolides, macrolides, phenothiazines, or drugs that prolong QT interval
- You are suffering (or have suffered) from heart problems or low levels of magnesium or potassium in the blood
- You are pregnant or breast-feeding
