Desirudin is used to prevent the formation of thrombi, particularly in patients undergoing hip replacement surgery.

Desirudin is a thrombin inhibitor. It works by blocking the formation of blood clots.

Side effects associated with Desirudin

Desirudin can increase the risk of bleeding. Among the other possible side effects of Desirudin include the following:

 

  • Redness and discomfort at the injection site

 

It is important to contact a doctor immediately if you experience:

 

  • Rash
  • Urticaria
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue
  • Back ache
  • Confusion
  • Fainting
  • Fever
  • Increased discharge from wounds
  • Formation of a mass at the injection site
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Weakness in one side of body
  • Severe or persistent dizziness, fatigue or weakness
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Swollen legs
  • Bleeding
  • Tingling, numbness (especially in the feet and legs) and muscle weakness
  • Vision problems

 

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Desirudin

Before starting treatment with desirudin, it is important to tell your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients or to any other drugs, food or various substances
  • You are taking any other medications, herbal remedies or supplements. Mentioning in particular: anticoagulant, antiplatelet, dextran 40, dipyridamole, glucocorticoids, glycoprotein IIb / IIa, NSAIDs, salicylates, SSRI, sulfinpyrazone and thrombolytics
  • You are suffering (or have suffered) from bleeding disorders, blood vessel disease, heart infections, pheochromocytoma, Severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, liver or kidney problems, bleeding in the brain, lung disorders,  eye problems or diabetic retinopathy
  • You are at an increased risk of bleeding
  • You have recently undergone surgery, biopsies, or donated blood
  • You have recently suffered from a stroke or head trauma
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding

 

It is important to inform physicians, surgeons and dentists of any ongoing treatment with desirudin.
