Sulfasalazine is used for the treatment of inflammation of the intestines, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding and abdominal pain in patients with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

 

It may also find use in the treatment of some forms of rheumatoid arthritis that do not respond to other medications.

Sulfasalazine is administered orally in the form of tablets. It generally takes four intakes a day, after a meal or a light snack, always with a full glass of water and swallowing the tablet strictly whole.

In men, Sulfasalazine can cause temporary infertility that is resolved with discontinuation of treatment.

 

Among other possible adverse effects are included:

  • Diarrhea

  • Loss of appetite

  • Stomach ache
  • Vomiting

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Sulfasalazine

 

During treatment with Sulfasalazine you need to drink plenty of water. Since it can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, in case of treatment it is recommended to protect yourself appropriately from its rays.

 

Moreover, before taking the drug it is recommended to inform your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance or any other drug, e.g. aspirin
  • You are taking other medications, herbal remedies and supplements, especially digoxin, folic acid and vitamins
  • You suffer (or have suffered) from asthma, porphyria, blood disorders, intestinal or urinary tract blockage or kidney or liver disease
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
