Primidone is an anticonvulsant. It works by reducing nerve impulses and helps during seizures.
How should Primidone be taken?
Primidone is administered orally in the form of tablets or suspension.
Side effects associated with Primidone
Among the possible adverse effects are included:
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Feeling faint or lightheaded
- Loss of appetite
- Loss of coordination skills
- Nausea
- Vomiting
You should immediately contact a doctor if taking Primidone triggers any of the following symptoms:
- Rash
- Urticaria
- Itchy skin
- Difficult breathing
- Chest tightness
- Swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue
- Problems in the sexual sphere
- Double vision or unusual movements of the eyes
- Temperature
- Rash similar to measles
- Anxiety, depression, restlessness or other mood and behavior distortion
- New or worsening seizures
- Fatigue or excessive weakness
Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Primidone
Primidone may impair the ability to drive or operate hazardous machinery, especially if taken in combination with alcohol or other drugs. It may also reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives.
It can take several weeks before this medicine shows effect. Additionally, intake must not be interrupted under any circumstances without first consulting with the physician.
Primidone should not be taken if you are also taking sodium oxybate and in case of porphyria.
Moreover, before starting the treatment it is important to tell your doctor if:
- You have any allergies to the active substance, its ingredients, other drugs (particularly to phenobarbital), dye tartrazine or any food
- You are taking other medications, herbal remedies and supplements, in particular sodium oxybate, stiripentol, valproic acid, anticoagulants, aromatase inhibitors, beta-blockers, clozapine, corticosteroids, doxycycline, epothilones, estrogens, griseofulvin, HIV protease inhibitors, hydantoins, the mTOR inhibitor, maraviroc, mtronidazolo, NNRTIs, oral contraceptives, quinidine, tacrolimus, teniposide, theophylline, tolvaptan, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors
- You suffer (or have suffered) from drug addiction or abuse, mood or psychiatric disorders, suicidal thoughts, liver disease and lung or breathing problems
- You plan to receive anesthesia
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
It is recommended to inform physicians, surgeons and dentists about ongoing treatment with Primidone prior to any procedure.
