Bumetanide is used in the treatment of edema (fluid accumulation) caused by medical problems such as kidney, liver and cardiac diseases. In some cases, it is also used in the treatment of high blood pressure.
What is Bumetanide?
Bumetanide is a loop diuretic. It acts to promote the elimination of water and excess salt from the kidneys in the form of urine.
How should Bumetanide be taken?
Typically, bumetanide is taken orally once a day in tablet form. Depending on the severity of edema, it may however be necessary to take a dose every four or five hours.
Side effects associated with Bumetanide
Among the possible side effects of bumetanide are included:
- increased frequency of urination
- dizziness
- upset stomach
- diarrhea
It is important to contact a doctor immediately if you start to feel the following:
- tinnitus
- hearing loss
- bruising or severe bleeding
- rash with peeling skin
- breathing
- difficulty swallowing
- hives
Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Bumetanide
Bumetanide is a very powerful diuretic and can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, it is therefore essential to follow the instructions given by the physician
Before taking this medicine you should also inform your doctor about:
- allergies to the substance, excipients or any other medicine, in particular to sulfa drugs
- medicines, herbal medicines and supplements you are taking, to mention in particular the drugs against high blood pressure, antibiotics, corticosteroids, digoxin, indomethacin, lithium and probenecid
- If you suffer (or have suffered) kidney disease, diabetes or heart disease or liver disease
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
You must also inform surgeons and dentists if you are being treated with bumetanide.
