Domperidone is an inhibitor of specific receptors of the neurotransmitter dopamine. It works by promoting the emptying of the digestive system and stimulating peristalsis of the esophagus and stomach. It also helps reduce the esophageal sphincter pressure. It also has antiemetic activity that helps prevent sickness.  

 

What is Domperidone?

Domperidone is used to manage dyspepsia, heartburn, epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting.

 

How should Domperidone be taken?

Domperidone is administered orally in the form of tablets to be taken 15 to 30 minutes before meals.

 

Side effects associated with Domperidone

Possible side effects of Domperidone include the following:

  • Production of milk from the nipples (in men)
  • Increased size of the mammary gland
  • Decreased libido (in men)
  • Vision problems
  • Problems with balance

 

You should immediately contact a doctor if you notice:

  • Swelling in hands, feet, ankles, face, lips or throat
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Urticaria
  • Abnormal heart beat ( particularly increase in frequency)
  • Uncontrollable movements of the eyes or tongue
  • Torsion of the neck
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Tremors

 

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Domperidone

Domperidone should not be taken with ketoconazole, erythromycin, telaprevir or ritonavir.

 

Before taking this medication, it is important to inform your doctor:

  • If you have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients or other drugs
  • If you are taking any medicinal products, herbal remedies or supplements. Mentioning in particular:  cimetidine, cabergoline, bromocriptine, artemether, tacrolimus, thiothixene, toremifene, trimipramine, vorinostat, ziprasidone, and zuclopenthixol
  • If you suffer (or have suffered) from cardiovascular problems, prolactinoma, ulcers, frequent and strong stomach cramps, intestinal blockage, kidney disease, liver or intestinal disease
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

 

It is important to inform surgeons and dentists of any ongoing treatment with Domperidone.
