Ceftibuten is an antibiotic that belongs to the beta-lactam category, more precisely to the third generation semisynthetic cephalosporins. It acts by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial wall. Similar to that of other cephalosporins, this antibiotic has the ability to bind to the transpeptidase enzymes that serve to create the bonds between the peptidoglycan chains (the polymers essential to the formation of the bacterial wall). In turn, the transpeptidase activity inhibits the stability of the bacterial cell wall, resulting in the death of growing bacterial cells.
What is Ceftibuten?
Ceftibuten is used to treat bacterial infections caused by bacteria susceptible to cephalosporin antibiotics. In particular, it is used to treat infections of the urinary and respiratory tract.
How should Ceftibuten be taken?
Due to its excellent bioavailability, dissipation and long half-life, this drug is administered orally on a daily basis and in a single dose. It can be taken in the form of tablets or in the form of granules for oral suspension.
Side effects associated with Ceftibuten
The administration of Ceftibuten is usually well-tolerated. Among the possible side effects resulting from its intake include the following:
- Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea , dyspepsia, abdominal pain, diarrhea;
- Central Nervous System Disorders: headache;
- Haematological disorders: leukopenia, thrombocytosis, anemia ;
- Liver function abnormalities: elevated aminotransferase, hyperbilirubinemia (in rare cases);
- Allergic reactions: bleeding, edema, bronchospasm, laryngospasm, dermatologic reactions, anaphylaxis.
Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Ceftibuten
Up to date, no studies have been conducted to confirm the safe use of this drug during pregnancy and during breast-feeding. For this reason, the use of Ceftibuten must be strictly limited to cases of real need and must always be administered under the strict supervision of a medical specialist. The use of Ceftibuten is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to penicillins and cephalosporins or its excipients.
