Irbesartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. It can also be used in case of kidney disease caused by diabetes type 2 and hypertension. Sometimes, it is also used in the treatment of congestive heart failure.
What is Irbesartan?
Irbesartan is an Angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Works by blocking the action of natural substances that constrict blood vessels. In this way, it facilitates the blood flow and helps the heart work more efficiently.
How should Irbesartan be taken?
Irbesartan can be taken orally in tablet form. Typically, the dosage includes one dose per day. Your doctor may prescribe a low dose initially and then increase it if necessary.
Side effects associated with Irbesartan
Among the possible side effects of irbesartan are included:
- diarrhea
- heartburn
- tiredness
It is better to immediately contact a doctor if you experience:
- swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles or calves
- hoarseness
- difficulty swallowing or breathing
Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Irbesartan
Irbesartan can cause dizziness and fainting when standing up from a lying position. For this it is recommended to be careful, especially in the early days of treatment.
Irbesartan should not be taken during pregnancy because during the last six months of pregnancy it can cause fetal death or it can cause serious damage.
Before you start taking it is also important to tell your doctor about:
- allergies to the substance, excipients or other drugs.
- Other medicines, herbal remedies and supplements taken, especially aspirin and NSAIDs, COX-2 selective inhibitors, diuretics and potassium supplements
- If you have diabetes and if you take aliskiren
- If you suffer (or have suffered) congestive heart failure or kidney disease
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
