Cryptorchidism, also known as undescended testicles, is a condition in which the testicle (rarely both) did not go down in its ultimate position into the scrotum before birth. The condition is more common in premature babies. Hence, by treating it early, the risk of complications, such as infertility or testicular cancer is reduced.

If the symptom is present in older children, a testicle retractable or ascending testicle, moving of the testicular may be performed.

What kind of diseases can be associated with cryptorchidism?

Diseases that may be associated with cryptorchidism are the following:

  • Male hypogonadism
  • Ichthyosis

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

What is the therapy for cryptorchidism?

In most cases the problem with cryptorchidism resolves itself spontaneously in the first months of the patient’s life. While on other occasions, it may take a surgical intervention to move the testicle into the scrotum. There are also hormone treatments that may be used instead of surgery, but they are less effective.

Instead, the retractable testicle can be placed back into the scrotum through a simple maneuver performed during a medical examination.

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of cryptorchidism?

Typically cryptorchidism is diagnosed shortly after birth.

If cryptorchidism is associated with a retractile or ascending testicle medical attention should be sought.
