The term distortion indicates a trauma to the joints, typically due to improper movements that cause momentary escape of the joint from its seat bone and its immediate return. Most often affected areas include the ankle, finger and knee joints. In some cases, it can result in stretching or tearing of ligaments, which are the tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect two bones together in the joints. When a ligament/tendon is damaged, internal bleeding and swelling will present itself around the injury. In severe cases, the ligament may be torn completely and bones may be fractured.

Seeking medical attention is advised if severe symptoms present themselves such as difficult walking with severe pain, inability to move the affected joint or numbness in any part of the injured area.  The location and intensity of the pain can help determine the extent and nature of the damage. This is turn will help to diagnose the condition and offer the most appropriate form of treatment (either through the RICE principle, antibiotics, immobilization, or even surgery).

What are the symptoms associated with a distortion?

Symptoms tend to vary depending on the severity of the injury. Distortion is very painful and usually causes the affected area to swell up. Some movements may be performed (such as those of the arms and legs) though they may be done with great difficulty and severe pain. Other symptoms may include the following:

  • Discoloration of the skin (bruising)
  • Tenderness of the affected area
  • Limitation range of motion
  • Joint instability
  • Bone deformity

What to do

If a distortion occurs, it is advisable to apply a cold compress to the affected area and run a tight bandage over it . Also, certain medications may be prescribed to relieve pain and help reduce swelling. If the sprain is mild, a few days of rest is needed; however, it is advisable to go to the emergency room regardless for proper examination (possibly undergoing a radiograph). More severe sprains sometimes require surgery to repair torn ligaments, muscles or tendons. After surgery, the joint is immobilized for several weeks followed by supportive bandaging and rehabilitation, to help rebuild ligaments and prevent any unnatural movements in the joint.

A few instructions on how to prepare for a doctor’s appointment in cases regarding distortion include:

  • Preparing a detailed description of symptoms present
  • Preparing any questions or concerns to address to the doctor
  • Taking down all current medications and dietary supplements
  • Preparing medical history

What not to do

In cases involving distortion, instructions on what not to do in order to prevent further complications from occurring include the following:

  • Avoid immobilizing the affected area, until after medical evaluation and x-ray examination
  • Avoid walking on slippery and uneven surfaces
  • Avoid poor exercise equipment that can contribute to the risk of distortion
  • Avoid footwear that doesn’t offer any support or protection
  • Avoid activities that can cause pain, swelling or discomfort
  • Avoid further twisting or pulling of the joint by properly warming up before exercising
