Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)
The work of the unit covers all the ENT sub-specialities in both a diagnostic and therapeutic sphere, adopting minimally-invasive methods which enable a reduction of the time of admission to hospital. In the outpatients’ sphere, the techniques of video-endoscopy and microscopy are used enabling early diagnosis and scrupulous selection of the patients intended for surgery. The most modern equipment (lasers, microdebriders and intra-operative monitoring of cranial nerves) is used by both otologic and otoneurologic microsurgery (chronic otitis, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, acoustic neuroma, vertigo surgery, cochlear implants in adults, and semi-implantable digital prostheses), and functional endoscopic surgery of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Micro-endoscopic surgery of juvenile fibrosarcoma and the anterior cranial base (CSF fistulas, neoplasms, etc.) also make use of this instrumentation, just like microscopic surgery of the lateral cranial base and surgery on the salivary glands. The unit is also concerned with oncological surgery of tumours of the head and neck, as the result of a multi-disciplinary collegial assessment of the individual case. The agreement with the School of Specialisation in ENT of the University of Pavia and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Insubria (Varese) is operational.
